"ROLLERBALL"
BOB PEAK IMAGES & FILM PRESSKIT
A 1975 retro history

When I was in high school In 1977 I saw the film Rollerball on cable TV. For a teenager this movie was the best of both worlds combining violent sports action and futurism. Of course I was hooked by the film which holds a strong attraction several decades later. Recently I went through my collection of sci-fi memorabilia and found some items that I had pretty much ignored for 40 years. In 1978 I purchased these from a movie memorabilia newsletter that I received in the mail monthly...which is how you located and bought collectibles per-internet. In it were pages and pages of dealers selling movie posters, stills, and even full-length 35mm films on reels. Two items I bought were these promotional pieces released by United Artists. Since these are fairly unknown I decided to archive them here.

BELOW: the first item was a press kit in a leatherette satchel.

BELOW: inside were a large number of b&w stills from behind the scenes.
My favorite is the team shot below.

BELOW:
also included were two folders with unique logos that held bios on the actors and most importantly a detailed set of game rules.

BELOW:
A third folder held three large posters of the playoff games in the film.

BELOW:
a separate purchase was a large silver-foil folder with 6 heavy stock prints titled "Great Moments from Rollerball". Painted onsite by Bob Peak of movie poster fame, these capture some vivid scenes from the Rollerball universe. The images are respectively Tokyo vs London, Tokyo vs Houston, London vs Houston, NY vs Houston, and Houston vs Paris.

CONCLUSION: Seeing this movie on a 25" glass tube TV in the late 1970s in 4:3 format was one thing. But seeing it on a 75" Bravia in blu-ray with full surround is a completely diffrent experience. The film holds up very well in the 21st century with exciting action, pacing and editing. Owning these brought me lots of pleasure...and in July 2021 I consigned them all to the online Heritage Movie Poster Auction. Time to let someone else enjoy them for another few decades.
